Anagama firing at Oxford University Kilns
2022, 2023
In September 2022, I had the opportunity to be part of an anagama wood firing in Oxford. Five of us fired the kiln over 80 hours, stoking it continuously every five or so minutes with cedar and oak logs.
The University have a set of kilns in Wytham Woods, one of them a smaller anagama-style kiln built by a potter from Bizen - Takuma Takikawa. It’s a managed forest, where they use dead and cut wood to fire the kilns.

I was able to be part of another all-women firing group in Spring of 2023 as well. Another amazing experience, and everyone brought their A-game when making the food, which was amazing. All cooked over a fire, with hot meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We even toasted crumpets on the edge of the kiln when it got to temperature!
